Flip-Flops Can Hurt Your Running & Hiking

Summer has hit Hood Canal and it’s the season for running and hiking! Believe me, nobody loves the flip-flop more than this guy – I can remember many summer activities in my younger years that I slid a set of these on and sauntered out the door. That was up until I started having pain in my heel and the posterior area of my legs, this is where a lot of your running and hiking muscles are located. The main culprit was due to Plantar Fasciitis (inflammation of a thick band of tissue that connects the heel bone to the toes) – a result of my feet having to work much harder to grip the flip-flop in my daily activities. If you are noticing pain in your calves and heel after running or hiking I urge you to take notice and be proactive. If your feet are working so hard during the day, then you go for a run or hike, it’s extra stress on all of your muscles and ligaments. What’s worse, if you ignore Plantar Fasciitis it may lead to chronic heel pain that hinders your activities, and can even result in the changing your posture and walking movement, causing sever foot, knee, hip or back problems. Not all is lost – this doesn’t mean that you can’t wear sandals! After all, there’s nothing more relaxing than letting your toes and feet get some fresh air after a hard run or hike. We recommend wearing a more structured sandal like the Birkenstock that has more arch support and straps. If you’re not into your “Mother’s Hippie Shoes,” check out my personal favorites Keen’s – they have a rubber toe protector and do very well even in wet environments! If neither of these catch your fancy, my go-to is a pair of old running shoes tied loosely to lounge around in. I’m curious runners and hikers, what open toed shoes do you wear, if you wear them at all?
